The Mission of the Dupont Circle Conservancy

The Dupont Circle Conservancy, formed in 1978, is an all volunteer membership-based non-profit 501c(3) educational organization.   Its mission is to promote preservation of the historic and architectural character of the Dupont Circle Historic District and nearby areas of the adjacent Greater U Street, Massachusetts Avenue (from 17th to 23rd Streets), Sixteenth Street, and Strivers' Section Historic Districts, all located in Northwest Washington, DC.

The Conservancy works to achieve this mission within its stated area by:

  • Reviewing and developing positions where new construction affects individual landmarks or structures contributing to the historic districts, or establishing positions on new stand-alone construction within the existing historic context;

  • Developing educational outreach efforts focused on historic preservation and the history of Washington, DC, in general, and the Dupont Circle neighborhood, in particular.  This work includes developing landmark nominations with  significant architectural, cultural, and/or social merit.

Overall, there are some 5,700 buildings and other structures within the Conservancy's  review area.  Click here (pdf link) for a map of Conservancy jurisdiction and historic districts.
